Susan A. Hollis - Susan has spent most of her summers since childhood on Cape Cod. Now a professional landscape painter, the tranquil beach scenes, sparkling waters and wind-swept dunes that have caught her artist's eye throughout her lifetime figure prominently in her impressionistic oils and pastels.

Artist's Statement:

Light, shadows, patterns and textures: these are the elements of nature's beauty that have always influenced and inspired my art.

As a long time fiber artist, I interpreted those same landscape elements into my weaving: essentially painting with yarn. Now, my work in oil and pastel focuses again on the landscapes, seascapes and skies that inspire my work.

Many painters prefer morning light, but for me that light is too fleeting, whereas, late afternoon light is a lingering light that flows through the landscape highlighting the colors, shadows, patterns and textures that I find so captivating. For me this progression, this changing relationship between neighboring colors, and the resultant warmth or coolness, is what results in a good painting. The challenge of capturing the shadows against the light, the intensity of moods created by those shadows casting patterns and textures on natural surfaces and the luminosity of reflected light results in alluring spectrums of purple, pink, orange and a multiplicity of greens and golds in an interplay of hues and tones. This is what drives me.

There is a rhythm to painting that each artist orchestrates for themself, a kind of color drenched warp and weft into which the artist weaves their emotional responses to the subject with an individual virtuosity for expressing what is seen. Dedication to trusting my own responses and love of what I do is woven into my painting and my life.
